Resource Spotlight: What Sports Programs Need to Know about Brain Safety and Youth Football
With fall sports practices and conditioning starting back up, many families are preparing to send their young athletes back onto the field. It's crucial for these athletes to take the proper precautions to keep their bodies safe and healthy. According to the CDC, football has the highest number of sports-related concussions and other traumatic brain injuries among youth.
CDC Heads Up, a concussion prevention and awareness program run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recently released "What Sports Programs Need to Know about Brain Safety and Youth Football," a guide for parents, caregivers, coaches, athletic trainers, and others who help keep young football players safer on the field. This new resource walks through different types of head injuries and how to prevent them, the importance of wearing a helmet, and the signs of an age-appropriate football program.

Monthly Spotlight: Something to Keep Your Eye On!
Member Spotlight: Kids and Car Safety
With the summer sun blazing, cars can quickly reach dangerous temperatures. It's important that we keep kids from overheating – especially in hot cars. This month we're spotlighting Kids and Car Safety, a national nonprofit that works to raise awareness about this safety issue.
Kids and Car Safety is a leader in the movement to prevent hot car tragedies. The organization educates parents, caregivers, and the greater public about the dangers of leaving kids in hot cars through public education and awareness programs, policy changes, product redesigning, and more. In June, Kids and Cars organized a visual display featuring 1,086 infant onesies symbolizing the number of children's lives lost in hot cars since 1990 across the street from the U.S. Department of Transportation in Washington, DC.

Summer is the season of outdoor celebrations. While fireworks are commonly used to celebrate summer holidays, they cause thousands of injuries every year. Keep your celebrations memorable, fun, and safer this year by leaving the fireworks to the professionals. According to the National Fire Protection Association, the only safe way to view fireworks is by attending a professional show. Happy Pride: Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth
June is a month dedicated to celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and acknowledging the disparities and challenges they face. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, although "LGBTQ+ youth are coming of age in the setting of increased LGBTQ+ rights and visibility, they remain vulnerable to higher rates of negative mental health outcomes." As parents and caregivers, it's important to let the LGBTQ+ youth in your life know you have their back.
To honor Pride Month, we're connecting our membership with some resources on LGBTQ+ mental health and the role injury prevention can play in the lives of these youth. Check out the following resources to learn more:

Event Spotlight: International Water Safety Day
May 15 is International Water Safety Day. Sponsored by the International Water Safety Foundation (IWSF), Water Safety Day is designed to help spread global awareness of the ongoing drowning pandemic and educate the youth in becoming safer in and around water. In recognition of International Water Safety Day, the National Drowning Prevention Alliance has released its 2024 Water Safety Season Toolkit to help guide your injury prevention outreach efforts. Throughout the month of May, share drowning prevention information and water safety tips with the communities you serve using the hashtag #ISWD2024. Join in our #BikeSafety outreach week!
As children get older, bikes provide the opportunity to get outside and explore, experience a bit of freedom, and spend time with friends. When they’re ready to venture out of the driveway and into the street, as their parent or caregiver, it’s important that you help them understand how to share the road safely. Our new bike safety toolkit educates parents and caregivers on how to set kids up to have fun and stay safer out on their bikes. The toolkit contains a newsletter/blog article, sample social media posts, graphics, suggested alt text, a Pinterest board, and links to additional resources that provide more information about bike safety.
The coordinated outreach week for this toolkit is THIS week, May 6 - 12, 2024. If you haven’t done so already, please add bike safety to your social media plans for the week. Feel free to share this toolkit with colleagues and friends who are interested in injury prevention!

Member Spotlight: National Safety Council
The National Safety Council is a non-profit organization that raises awareness about injury prevention topics through education, outreach, and collaboration with individuals and organizations.
As Distracted Driving Awareness Month is underway this April, the NSC’s Road to Zero Coalition works around-the-clock to reduce traffic fatalities and make roads safer for you and your loved ones. The NSC also hosts various events throughout the month of April to educate drivers on the importance of attentive driving.
The National Safety Council also sponsors Window Safety Week–the first full week in April–to raise awareness of the dangers open windows can pose in the home, and promote steps parents and caregivers can take to make window safety a priority in their home. You can join the conversation online by using the hashtags #WindowSafety or #WindowSafetyWeek.

The Share-My-Screen Series on Health Communications Skills
Looking to expand your communications skills? Join the Center for Injury Research Translation & Communication (CIRTC) for a new series of live monthly trainings on communications tips and best practices to create more effective, polished communications of all types. Each session in the Share-My-Screen Series will feature 15-20 minutes of live demonstrations followed by Q&A. CIRTC will devote three trainings to a topic and then change it up, covering topics like content creation, messaging, and accessibility.
For the first series, CIRTC will focus on the basics of design and show you exactly how to use programs like Canva and PowerPoint to create actionable, accessible visuals and presentations that look great too. February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, this month is an excellent time to talk with teens about what a healthy relationship is, how to set boundaries in a relationship, and how to recognize the signs of an unhealthy relationship.
Love Is Respect is a federally-supported national resource that works to prevent unhealthy relationships and empower young people through education, support, and resources. In 2020, Love Is Respect connected with more than 45,000 teens and youth through its LOVEIS text lifeline, providing critical and lifesaving support. The organization also provides answers to frequently-asked dating questions and offers educational quizzes to teach teens more about themselves and their relationships.

New Food-related Choking Toolkit
Food. We spend so much of our lives eating. However, a child takes years to develop the ability to eat food safely. It is therefore not a surprise that for young kids, more than half of choking incidents involve food. Our new food-related choking toolkit educates parents and caregivers on how to keep kids safer for meals, snacks, and every bite in between. The toolkit contains a newsletter/blog article, sample social media posts, graphics, suggested alt text, a Pinterest board, and links to additional resources that provide more information about food-related choking. Spanish translations of the graphics and newsletter will be added soon!
The coordinated outreach week for this toolkit is February 26 - March 3, 2024. If you haven’t done so already, please add food-related choking to your social media plans for that week. Reminder: your membership gives you advanced access to the toolkit, so please do not share this link. We'll send a public link on February 19th, which you are free (and encouraged!) to share with colleagues and friends.

Agriculture had the highest number of occupational fatalities across industries for youth aged 17 and younger from 2011-2020,1 with tractors and ATVs/UTVs being the leading source of deaths. As compared to urban youth, rural and agricultural youth experience greater disparities across fatal and non-fatal injuries. In this webinar, Marsha Salzwedel, Project Scientist at the National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety (NCCRAHS) and the National Farm Medicine Center (NFMC), will talk about advancing equity using prevention strategies, and how to address the inherent challenges in working with rural and agricultural youth. Scott Heiberger, Communications Manager at the NCCRAHS, NFMC, and Marshfield Clinic Research Institute, will discuss how to advocate for children on social media. He will introduce the Media Guidelines and Tools of the Trade and share resources that have been translated to multiple languages and can be customized to include diverse skin tones, settings, and equipment. #KidsProductSafety Outreach Week
Today is the first day of our outreach week for our new product recalls toolkit! Many parents and caregivers think that products must be safe for kids before they’re allowed to be sold. The truth, though, is that many products aren't tested before sale to make sure they meet safety standards, and many products aren’t regulated at all. This means that the hot new toy might end up being a fire hazard or a choking risk, but you won’t know until a problem happens. Our new product recalls toolkit educates parents and caregivers on product safety and how to report problems with items their family uses. If you haven’t done so already, please add product recalls to your social media plans for this week.

Consumer Reports, a nonprofit organization working towards truth, transparency, and fairness in the marketplace, has created a toy safety guide for consumers this holiday season. NEW Youth Suicide Prevention Toolkit
Our youth suicide prevention toolkit is now available to the public! Recent headlines and reports about the concerning state of youth mental health have given us a clear call to action: we all need to ramp up our efforts to support kids and connect them with the help they need. Our new youth suicide prevention toolkit addresses this by encouraging parents and caregivers to show teens that they have their back, and resources like the 988 support line are here to help, too. The toolkit contains a newsletter/blog article, sample social media posts, graphics, suggested alt text, a Pinterest board, and links to additional resources that provide more information about youth suicide prevention.

Resource Spotlight: U.S. National Water Safety Action Plan
On June 29, 2023, the first ever U.S. National Water Safety Action Plan (USNWSAP) was launched. The USNWSAP's vision is for a county where everyone is safe in, on, and around the water and the 10-year plan lays out how we start to get there. The Plan is a national roadmap for collective action to reduce drowning, providing a framework and tools to support the development and implementation of data- and evidence-informed context-specific water safety action plans in communities, counties, and states across the country.
The call to action is aimed at everyone in the water safety and drowning prevention communities, including aquatics professionals, public health and safety professionals, policymakers, researchers, advocates, families, and manufacturers, challenging them to work together to ensure more effective action to increase water safety and prevent drowning.
Among the tools are 99 evidence-informed action recommendations developed over the last number of years with input of hundreds of experts from across the country and a 12-step Reflection to Action process to support action plan development.

Children's Safety Network (CSN) will be hosting three optional webinars (you need only attend one) that provide information about applying for the first cohort of the 2023 Child Safety Learning Collaborative (CSLC).
This fall, the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), in cooperation with CSN, is launching the first cohort of the CSLC for state and jurisdiction Title V agencies. The CSLC is a unique opportunity to join a national network of peers addressing high priority child safety and injury prevention issues. Participating states and jurisdictions receive targeted support and guidance on evidence-based and evidence-informed strategies, how to use quality improvement tools and approaches and the opportunity to share resources, ideas and innovations with peers.
Applications for Cohort 1 (December 2023-May 2025) will be available beginning August 1 and will close on September 27.

2023 Social Media Calendar
We are excited to release the second half (July - December) of our 2023 Social Media Calendars. Both versions contain a list of Prevent Child Injury’s weekly social media topics and links to existing toolkits.
As an extra benefit, the calendar version includes a more complete list of injury prevention public health observances and outreach campaigns. We ask that you join us in our efforts by using your social media accounts to discuss the same weekly topics. By doing this, we will be able to amplify our message about child injury prevention.
Member Spotlight: Moms Demand Action
Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement including moms, mayors, students, gun owners, faith leaders, educators, artists and more fighting for public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence. Ten years ago, in response to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Shannon Watts started a Facebook group with the message that all Americans can and should do more to reduce gun violence. That online conversation grew into what is now the nation’s largest grassroots volunteer network working to end gun violence. Today, Moms Demand Action has a chapter in every state and more than 700 local groups across the country, and is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with nearly 10 million supporters.
Moms Demand Action's advocacy work ranges from advocating for stronger gun laws, honoring and uplifting survivors of gun violence, and fostering a culture of responsible gun ownership in homes and communities. One of the cornerstones of this work is through Be SMART, a program designed to help parents and adults normalize conversations about secure firearm storage and learn how to prevent child gun deaths and injuries.

New Open Water Swimming Safety Toolkit!
Although the risk of drowning decreases for children after age 4, it spikes again during their teenage years, especially for swimmers in open water. The conditions in lakes, oceans, rivers, and ponds are not always easy to see and can change quickly, which can turn swimming in open water from a fun activity into a dangerous one. With swimming season on the horizon, our new open water swimming safety toolkit addresses these dangers by encouraging parents and caregivers to talk to teens about making safe and smart decisions when swimming in open water. The toolkit contains a newsletter/blog article, social media posts, graphics, suggested alt text, an image selection guide, a Pinterest board, and links to additional resources which provide more information about open water swimming safety.

The National Drowning Prevention Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing drowning and injuries around all types of water. The NDPA raises awareness about water safety through education, advocacy, and collaboration with individuals and organizations.
To pass along water safety education to consumers and industry advocates, the NDPA created its Water Safety Champion Program. The program equips each member with key water safety facts and the 5 layers of protection to prevent childhood drowning, and encourages members to spread the information to their communities.
As the water safety season approaches, the National Drowning Prevention Alliance has released a new Water Safety Season Toolkit. The toolkit consists of social posts, shareable blogs, press release templates, printable documents, and other resources to advocate for water safety and drowning prevention. To promote water safety during the busiest water activity season, join the NDPA in May through August during their Water Safety Season Campaign.

For the past 30 years, the Center for Childhood Safety has been dedicated to helping families and communities keep kids safe from injuries. Located in Green Bay, CCS's mission is to be the leading source of safety education and programming in Northeast Wisconsin.
The Center for Childhood Safety offers car seat checks, a Safe Sitter babysitting class, a Safety Town summer camp for kids 4-9 years old, CPR certifications, and outreach about bike helmets. As a community leader, the center also distributes car seats, pack-n-plays, and bike helmets to families in need.

Outreach Week Change & Webinar
Update: our upcoming Open Water Toolkit outreach week has been moved to May 15-21, 2023. This change allows us to align our campaign with other events happening in water safety, such as International Water Safety Day and T4CIP's #PreventDrowning Day of Action (both May 15). To accommodate the new outreach week, we have updated our social media calendars as well.
During our outreach week, we will be partnering with T4CIP on their Day of Action for a #PreventDrowning Webinar. The webinar will be on May 15 from 11 a.m. to noon ET and moderated by Dr. Ben Hoffman (Oregon Health and Science University). Panelists include Dr. Sarah Denny (Nationwide Children's), Adam Katchmarchi (National Drowning Prevention Alliance), Leland Brown (USA Swimming), and Tiffaney Isaacson (Phoenix Children's)

The Brain Injury Association of Ohio (BIAOH) is a statewide advocacy and education organization. Carbon Monoxide Safety Toolkit
Our updated carbon monoxide toolkit is now available! Carbon monoxide can’t be seen, smelled, or heard, yet it kills more than 400 people each year in the U.S. and sickens thousands more. If our senses can’t detect it, how can we protect ourselves and our loved ones from this “invisible killer? Installing an alarm is the only way to know if there is carbon monoxide in your home.
Our toolkit focuses on encouraging parents and caregivers to install a carbon monoxide alarm in their homes. The toolkit contains a customizable press release, newsletter/blog article, social media posts, graphics, a Pinterest board, and links to additional resources which provide more information about carbon monoxide safety.
The coordinated outreach week for this toolkit is January 30 - February 5, 2023. If you haven’t done so already, please add carbon monoxide safety to your social media plans for that week, and share this email with others who are interested in carbon monoxide safety.

Featured Member: Parent's Against Tip-Overs
Parents Against Tip-Overs (PAT) was founded in 2018 by a group of parents who had all lost children to furniture tip-over incidents. Following their personal tragedies, Parents Against Tip-Overs was created to educate the public on the importance of anchoring furniture to the wall, advocate for safety standards, and increase the awareness and prevention of TV and furniture tip-over injuries and deaths.
On December 29th, 2022, President Biden signed the STURDY Act, which directs the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish stronger, mandatory standards for the stability of clothing storage furniture. The standards will be based on real-world causes of tip-overs such as multiple open drawers, drawers with items inside, and the effect of carpeting as well as testing the weight of a 6-year-old and testing to simulate the dynamic forces created when a child climbs. PAT worked with the Commission and other partners to get the STURDY Act passed and was recognized for their successful advocacy with the 2022 Kids In Danger Best Friend Award.
PAT reminds every parent and caregiver that it's still very important to anchor furniture and TVs to the wall to prevent tip-overs. The Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is hosting a 3-day Virtual Media Institute for public health professionals on February 9, 16, and 23, 2023 from 1 to 5 p.m. ET on Zoom.
