Featured Member: Injury Prevention Centre

The Injury Prevention Centre - part of the University of Alberta’s School of Public Health - is a team of researchers, data analysts, program coordinators, educators, and communicators that work to create a dialogue between the Centre, healthcare practitioners, community partners, and Albertans. The Centre’s mission is to reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths in Alberta by encouraging people to take action so they can continue to work and play, free from life-limiting injury. The Injury Prevention Centre leads several programs and campaigns that range from concussion awareness, poison prevention, older adult falls, ATV safety, and helmet awareness. Online Concussion Training: HEADS UP to Athletic Trainers

This training course on concussion, developed through a partnership between CDC and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), is designed specifically for athletic trainers working at the high school level or below. Athletic trainers play an important role in concussion prevention and management, including how they work with other stakeholders such as coaches, parents, athletes, and school professionals. This course will empower you to better support athletes and other stakeholders and contribute to an overall culture of concussion safety. It provides a refresher and update for seasoned athletic trainers, and will help build practical on-the-ground skills for newer athletic trainers. Click here to learn more.

Event: National Mental Health Awareness Month

Since 1949, Mental Health America has observed May as Mental Health Month. MHA invites other organizations to join in spreading the word that mental health is something everyone should care about by using the May is Mental Health Month toolkit materials and conducting awareness activities. After the last two years of pandemic living, many people are realizing that stress, isolation, and uncertainty have taken a toll on their well-being. This year, the theme of MHA’s 2022 Mental Health Month Toolkit is "Back to Basics." The goal is to provide foundational knowledge about mental health & mental health conditions and information about what people can do if their mental health is a cause for concern.

May 15-21, 2022, is the 47th annual National EMS Week. In 1974, President Gerald Ford authorized EMS Week to celebrate EMS practitioners and the important work they do in our nation's communities. NAEMT partners with the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) to lead annual EMS Week activities. Together, NAEMT and ACEP are working to ensure that the important contributions of EMS practitioners in safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of their communities are fully celebrated and recognized.

Event: Don't Fry Day
Hosted by: National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention

To help reduce rising rates of skin cancer from overexposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has designated the Friday before Memorial Day as “Don’t Fry Day” to encourage sun safety awareness and to remind everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors.
