June 2022

June is Gun Violence Awareness Month. Recent events have made this issue even more visible, and parents and caregivers are looking for ways to protect their children from firearm-related injuries. With many firearm injuries happening in homes, it’s critical to know the environment children are spending time in before sending them to others’ homes for visits, parties, and play dates. Our new Firearm Safety: ASK Day toolkit, now available to the public, focuses on encouraging families to ask about gun storage in homes their children visit. The toolkit contains a customizable press release, newsletter/blog article, social media posts, graphics, and links to additional resources which provide more information about safer storage of firearms and how to ask about how they're stored in the home.

The coordinated outreach week for this toolkit is next week, June 13-19, 2022 and includes a webinar featuring a panel of experts on gun safety (details below). If you haven't done so already, please take some time to add firearm safety to your social media and outreach plans and share this email with others who care about children and firearm safety.

Summer Media Institute

Effective communication in public health has never been more important. In today’s crowded media climate, it can be challenging to break through to the audience you are trying to reach. Come learn the skills you need to share research, promote programs, and create safer, healthier communities through the media and social media.

The Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital is hosting a virtual 3-day Summer Media Institute for public health professionals July 12-14, 2022. The workshop presenters have been featured in media outlets around the world and have created local and national outreach campaigns. Their expertise includes behind-the-scenes media planning, on-air interviews, working with reporters, and using social media for public health.

Ten (10) entry-level CECH credits are available for CHES members.
